A Superworth story
Paying up for a machine that kept working
Record margins and a multiple near its ten year high, just as growth is expected to slow
Growth came back
Revenue sat flat around 385 billion dollars through 2024, which was the bear case. It then moved to 467 billion. The flat stretch and the reacceleration are both on this chart.
Ten year high margins, with a one-off inside
Gross margin over the last twelve months is 48.7 percent, the highest in ten years and well above its ten-year median. About two points of the June quarter came from tariff refunds, a one-off, which is roughly half a point on the twelve-month figure.
Profit did most of the lifting
Earnings per share rose by about a third, to 8.72 dollars in the year to June 2026. The share count fell less than 2 percent, so nearly all of the rise is profit itself. Buybacks shrink the count, but only profit growth can keep earnings rising for good. The dip in late 2024 is a one-off tax charge in a single quarter, not a weaker business.
Cash rose faster than earnings
Free cash flow over the last twelve months is 136.68 billion dollars, up about 42 percent in a year, faster than earnings. The profit is turning into cash. The next two steps ask how much the price already pays for it.
The PE sits near a ten year high
The stock costs more for each dollar of profit than on almost any day in ten years. The PE is about 39. Since its 2019 low the multiple has roughly tripled, and so have earnings per share. Its seven industry peers trade at a median of 38, so Apple is in line with its industry, just not with its own past.
A top multiple just as growth slows
Adjusted earnings, which leave out the one-off tax charge, grew about a fifth last year. For the next twelve months consensus sees 9.29 dollars a share, up only 6.4 percent. The chart shows what today's price pays for that, near its ten year high. Points before late September are rebuilt with today's estimates.
November 2 starts the test
The September quarter's report comes first, with consensus at 1.99 dollars a share. The bigger test is December, the first quarter with the iPhone Duo foldable and dearer Pro models. Consensus expects revenue only about 6 percent above last December's record. Beating that would back the multiple. Missing it would leave little cushion.

From each company's 10-Q and 10-K filings, the newest version of each figure. Quarters are as filed (a fourth quarter is the year less its first nine months), fiscal years as the 10-K prints them, restated where a later 10-K restated them, and balance sheet lines as of the period's end. A quarter whose 10-Q isn't filed yet is from the company's results release. Growth is on the same period a year earlier. A dash is a period with no figure for the line: the filing doesn't print it, or it hasn't been read yet.
