A Superworth story
Priced for a foundry that is still being built
A third off its June peak, and still far above its own history on sales
Even after the fall, its sales cost far more than usual
Intel's price is about eight times its last twelve months of sales. That is still higher than about 95% of the last ten years, when around three was normal. Price to earnings says nothing here: on reported numbers, Intel lost money over the last year.
More than doubled in a year, then gave back a third
Hopes that Intel's factories would win marquee customers, Apple among the names, took the stock from about 37 dollars a year ago to a June peak near 141. It has since lost more than a third. The latest leg came fast. Chip stocks sold off in mid-October on worries about how long AI spending lasts and how it gets paid for.
Sales are growing again, led by data centers and AI
For two years, twelve-month revenue sat near 53 billion dollars. It is now 57.03 billion. Most of the gain came in the June quarter, when data center and AI sales rose by more than half. Consensus expects about a fifth more revenue over the next twelve months.
Margins are recovering, but sit far below the old Intel
Twelve-month gross margin has climbed back to 38.6%, near late 2023's level but far below the old Intel's. Operating margin is back to roughly break-even. The reported loss is mostly on paper. Part of the US government's stake is shares held back until conditions are met, and Intel books them as a cost that grows when its stock rises. The June-quarter rally made that a 12.5 billion dollar charge.
Cash flow turned positive by cutting investment
Twelve-month free cash flow went from a loss of 10.20 billion dollars in September 2023 to a gain of 2.83 billion. The reason: Intel cut its yearly capital spending roughly in half. In July the finance chief said Intel is meaningfully increasing investment again, so that cash could shrink before new factories pay off.
New shares fund a foundry that still loses billions a quarter
Intel has issued shares to pay for its factories, and an August sale of another 20 billion dollars is not yet in the chart. The foundry, which makes chips for other companies, still lost 2.09 billion dollars in the June quarter. The hope: Tesla has signed on for 14A, Intel's next chipmaking process. The fear: one customer does not fill a factory, and Apple has confirmed nothing.
The October 29 report tests whether the growth is real
At today's price, consensus adjusted earnings put Intel at about 52 times the next twelve months, about double its peers, a bet on profits nearly doubling. The line before late September is rebuilt with hindsight. On October 29 Intel reports the September quarter, with consensus a touch above its guide. Its year-end outlook, and whether more customers sign up for 14A, decide which way the bet goes.

From each company's 10-Q and 10-K filings, the newest version of each figure. Quarters are as filed (a fourth quarter is the year less its first nine months), fiscal years as the 10-K prints them, restated where a later 10-K restated them, and balance sheet lines as of the period's end. A quarter whose 10-Q isn't filed yet is from the company's results release. Growth is on the same period a year earlier. A dash is a period with no figure for the line: the filing doesn't print it, or it hasn't been read yet.
